Yoga is a practice or discipline that involves physical, mental and spiritual exercises. Yoga first originated in ancient India and is one of the six Astika (orthodox) schools of Hindu philosophical traditions.
Today, there is a broad range of yoga schools, practices and goals in Hinduism, Buddhism and Jainism. Yoga gurus from India introduced yoga to the Western world in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
A very common branch of Yoga that is practiced in the United States and in much of the Western world is a modern form of hatha yoga. In Sanskrit, the word hatha means “force” and is in reference to a system of physical techniques. A majority of yoga styles that are practiced outside of India have developed into a practice of posture-based physical fitness that includes stress-relief and relaxation techniques.
